Railways will buy 75 lakh AI-driven CCTVs worth Rs 15,000 crore to position them at the front, rear, and sides of the engine and guard coach of the trains, as well as on cattle guards and bogies.

Speaking with the media in New Delhi on September 11, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the installation of the multiple cameras on all trains will help monitor tracks and surrounding areas inorderto prevent several recent derailment attempts.

Describing the recent spate of attempts to derail the running trains as very alarming, Vaishnaw added that a tender for will be floated within three months. A central data center will be established to store and review footage from these devices. The plan includes equipping 40,000 coaches, 14,000 locomotives, and 6,000 electric multiple units (EMUs) with AI-driven CCTV cameras. The Railways has of late begun to roll out kavach to protect from accidents.

The recent attempts to derail the trains have sent the chills down the spine of the railway officials wondering about the motive of the suspected miscreants. Never before have so many sabotages been attempted to cause deaths and injury of the commuters on the train. Just since August, 18 attempts have been made to cause derailment of the running trains.
