Trackman Mahadeva ran fast along the tracks for half a kilometre in only 5 minutes at around 4.50 am on Friday. He was able to flag down the train in just nick of time and averted a major train accident on the Konkan Railway line between Kumta and Honnavar. Mahadeva, on routine duty, had noticed an incomplete welding of the track joint in the area.

Trackman Mahadeva had sensed an imminent danger. The Thiruvananthapuram-Delhi Rajdhani Express was approaching this route.
Only after the track had been welded complete did the Rajdhani Express safely resume its journey towards Karwar. The split-second decision of Mahadeva, who risked his life to ensure the safety of hundreds of passengers, was widely praised.
Hailing Trackman Mahadeva as a hero, Konkan Railway CMD Santhosh Kumar Jha awarded him a cash prize of Rs 15,000.
